May 2010
From Lauren Sisco, President
“The stage of emptying is a powerful place for learning. There is much behind us now. If we practice hindsight with alertness, we can see the big pattern.”
Jeanne Carbonetti
There are conclusions to many aspects of our lives. More closely to our souls, we somehow know when it is time to conclude a piece of art we have created. We started with a vision and then proceeded to do the work to bring it to life. Sometimes, we found obstacles which impeded our progress. But, in the end, we did our best and set course for letting go of our work.
As our season comes to a close, I leave this office with even greater gratitude. I am sincerely grateful for all our members and what each one brings to our Guild. As hard as it can be to find volunteers to do roles or tasks, I was amazed at how so many unselfishly stepped forward to give a hand. There are so many to name. Please accept my thanks to all of you for your support and spirit!
I could not have led this organization this year without the incredible support and creative ideas from the rest of your Board. Let me share some brief thoughts as I reflect on the year with these folks:
Sheila Goehring, Vice-President, coordinated and planned every meeting ensuring that the speakers were prepared and ready to roll on the day of our event. I’ve had numerous comments from members on what great meetings we have had this year! We averaged 40-50 members at each meeting.
Tutt Hoy, Recording Secretary, never missed a beat in summarizing not only our monthly meetings but also any board meeting held. She also was a leader in working with Leslie Wells and Judy Smiegel in planning our brown bags. Anybody who knows Tut, also knows of her innovative spirit with the life drawing class.
Kathy Simms, Corresponding Secretary, ensured thank you notes found their way to deserving individuals. And, on occasion, sadly, words of comfort to those who were ill or experiencing a sense of loss. Kathy also ensured we had goodies from volunteers at each of our meetings.
Gene Fischer, Treasurer, accurately reported our finances each month. He instituted an audit of our books confirming no surprises to address. Despite being the only male on the team, Gene was a trooper and always contributed!
Carol Koch, Workshop Chairman, coordinated four workshops for us. There is much which goes on behind the scenes to make these happen and Carol always made it look easy!
Kathy Fisher, Class Chairman, makes class management look easy. Once again, we take for granted what has to happen behind the scenes from supply management to coordination of the calendar to finding and aiding outside instructors to teach for us. In addition, as past President, Kathy was invaluable providing historical perspective to the Board as we all worked through decision-making for the Guild. Kathy also retained ownership of our Website and ensured it had the latest and greatest. She also worked with the Quilters who offered to purchase 12 more screens!
Sharon Elmore, Publicity Chairman, is our rock.
In addition, I want to thank the following individuals for their special service:
Rosey Brehm, Membership Chairman, ensured we effectively transitioned new members. We were blessed this year with many new members which had Rosey busily updating our directory and ensuring they are linked to all the services of the Guild.
Joe Williams … thank you for coordinating the library exhibits in addition to all the other ‘honey’ do’s I leaned on you for!
Mary Lee Wilkinson … thank you for being our historian and recording all of the Guild activities. Thank you for coordinating our Chota exhibits!
ALL those volunteers who helped with the Spring Show this year …. too many to name … but I so observed what happens days and days before the show to watch the teaming which takes place.
All those who volunteered to prepare and teach a brown bag!
Cheryl Peyton for advice and counsel to so many members. Your willingness to help is always appreciated!
I apologize to others I just know I might have missed to thank! Ahhhhh …. I hate that but ALL of you have been so supportive and kind to me throughout the year. I feel as though I just might have a few more friends playing it forward! THANK YOU!
Our final meeting will be a luncheon at the Yacht Club on May 20th at 11:00. Everyone bring a dish to share as AGTV provides the beverages. We will have a good time as we vote in our new Board for next year.
See you then!

Reaching out to all members! We have two needs which need gracious volunteers to lead. Please contact Lauren Sisco if you are interested!
Historian: Mary Lee Wilkinson has handled this since forever and will be passing on to someone. Simply, this is taking pictures at our key meetings and events and then creatively organizing in a scrapbook for future reference. If someone wants to team on this with one being the photographer and the other doing the scrapbook, that is okay too!
Mural Coordinator: Judee Andrews passed this one several weeks back, and a volunteer is still needed to fill this role. When the Guild is contacted by outside organizations to ask for help with mural paintings, this person lead's the effort with many others to help! Judee could fill you in on what is needed!

Meet a new member:
Grey Perry-- My wife Nancy and I live in
I had an early interest in art from grade school when I won a small contest painting one of the panes in a large window in a local pharmacy. I took some special art courses at the high school when I was in middle school. I've had no formal training outside of some watercolor classes I took at
I paint in watercolor most of the time. I also enjoy pen and ink sketching, and am now beginning to try acrylics from watching Jerry Yarnell on television. I have also done some clay sculpture. I am interested in entering some art shows to see how my work compares to others in the area.
I've also done some group painting with Jean Porter here at R. B.

April 2010
From Lauren Sisco, President
"It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful, but it is more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally we can do. To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts. We are tasked to make our lives, even in its details, worthy of the contemplation of our most elevated and critical hour." Henry David Thoreau I bought this book "Thoreau and the Art of Life". The book is comprised of journal entries written by Thoreau. His journal entries certainly reflected his deep beliefs in the experiences of nature.
When I read this excerpt from his journal, I reflected on how it has been quite a journey these last few months painting and preparing for our upcoming April show. And while all of that was important, in the end, our show is everything about making someone's day. They will come to our show with much anticipation on what they will be seeing. But, we hope they walk away with an uplifted spirit and appreciation for our small attempt to change our world.
We will see you at our next monthly meeting on Thursday, April 8th. Our last speaker for the season will be Denise Sanabria. You will read more about her talents below. Don't miss this one!
We will also be nominating our new officers. They will then be voted into their positions at our May 20th luncheon.
See you then!

PLEASE NOTE:
Art Guild Meeting Thursday, April 8th
The Art Guild of
Denise Stewart-Sanabria was born in
Lori Waxman, an art critic for the Chicago Tribune, states, “If drawing traditionally provides an intimate medium through which to sketch, record, and transmit both the loosest and most precise of figurative detail, Denise Stewart-Sanabria’s practice turns that tradition on its penciled head. Life-size and larger-than-life-size, her charcoal on birch plywood drawings dwarf the viewer, existing as uncanny representations of average folks in real space”.
When asked to describe her subject matter, Stewart-Sanabria tells us, “I'm mainly a representational artist, though I do other experimental work that diverges from that. I like social commentary and observation, and that can best be done from a figurative foundation”.
She explains her methods of painting: “I work with charcoal on plywood and various other mediums from graphite to ink on surfaces ranging from organza to paper to stone, bark and wood. As a painter, I fluctuate from oil to slow drying acrylics depending on my deadlines. I'll work with anything I can get my hands on so long as it doesn't decompose, however.
I also do installations and 3D work that can incorporate some weird stuff. I recently had someone offer to buy a drawing if I would remove it from the old window frame it was in, and I declined. The filthy glass that obscured half the drawing was made permanently filthy due to an application of glass sealant. After sealing the dirt, I realized there was also a dead fly stuck on the glass. This was a bonus. The drawing means nothing without these elements.”
She characterizes her style as “progressive hyper-realism”.

** From Sandra Washburn Workshop-Repoussage and Renaissance boxes. “For this workshop, I plan to use acrylic in applications either on heavy board or canvas (artist preference). I plan to incorporate a mixed media technique called repoussage, which involves reverse texturing of thin sheets of metal foil, then attaching these to the chosen support, either canvas or board, and, adding patinas, and embellishing with acrylics, gold leaf, etc. This is the first time I have incorporated metals into an acrylic workshop. This mixed media lesson plan is borne of my recently acquired skills with metals and the compatibility of metals and mixed media. Also, if time allows, I would like to delve into Renaissance boxes, using small stretched canvases that are 2" deep to make low relief sculptures. These boxes will also incorporate many of the materials we have used in the past for collage/mixed media, as well as the thin sheets of metal foil.”

March 2010
From Lauren Sisco, President
“More than half a century has passed,
and yet each Spring, when I
wander into the primrose wood
and see the pale yellow blooms,
and smell their sweetest of scents
… for a moment I am seven
years old again and wandering
in the fragrant wood.”
Gertrude Jekyll
Did the last name of this author catch your attention as well? My curiosity led me to Google just who was Gertrude Jekyll. As it turns out, her younger brother, Reverend Walter Jekyll, was a friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, who did borrow the family name for his famous novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde! More importantly, however, Gertrude was a “designer of plantings”. Up until her death in 1932, she was a huge contributor of the Arts and Crafts movement as a result of her painterly approach to the arrangement of the gardens she created. She evidently made her mark with her Impressionistic-style gardening schemes. Prior to her deteriorating eyesight, she was a painter and watercolourist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_Jekyll
It is no surprise to any artist to know how important our surroundings are to inspire us with our art styles. Spring is one of those seasons which just seems to wake up the soul, giving us even more subject matter to work within our studios!
If the outdoors doesn’t get you going, check out one of the upcoming classes or workshops! We still have some great offerings before the summer months begin.
Also, we are just a month away from our annual Spring Art Show. If you plan on showing, please be sure your membership is current (Rosey Brehm) and your application is submitted to Sharon Elmore by Monday, March 29th.
See you this Thursday the 18th when we enjoy the artistic pleasures of Lyda Plemons!

Local artist, Lyda Plemons, will be the guest presenter at the Art Guild’s March 18th monthly meeting. Beginning with a social hour at
Lyda Plemons has been painting for over 35 years. She has trained with national artists Mary Mueller, Larry Blovits, George Bemis, and other outstanding instructors. She has had several One Woman Shows, received many awards and ribbons, and had her work featured in magazines and newspapers.
While at one time, Plemons approached her artwork in a more business minded manner, worrying about what pieces would sell and how many pieces to paint, she says she now paints for enjoyment. When she considers painting a particular piece, she asks herself, “How much am I going to enjoy it?”
She has become more involved in volunteering and sharing her art. She paints murals for her church—8 feet high and 40 feet long, changing them every few months. She puts on workshops for children and adults. Three hours a week she teaches at the Asbury Nursing Facility.
Plemons enjoys drawing and several media with a “unique ability to paint realistic flowers in oil.” She credits this to her first instructor, Blanche McGee and her love of flower gardening. It is no surprise that she chooses florals as a favorite to paint, often picking a particular flower to paint as it makes its seasonal appearance in her garden. Her painting subjects also include birds and things found in nature. She mentions that her nine-year old grandson has a few suggestions of his own for things for her to paint, the results of his outside explorations. In addition to her still life paintings and landscapes, she paints portraits, often of family members and neighbors.
She prefers to paint in the early morning hours between
When asked, she characterizes her style as realistic but feels her backgrounds are impressionistic with a dapple of color and atmospheric effect.

February 2010
From Lauren Sisco, President
"Man is buffeted by circumstances so long as he believes himself to be the creature of outside conditions, but when he realizes that he is a creative power, and that he may command the hidden soil and seeds of his being out of which circumstances grow, he then becomes the rightful master of himself."
James Allen
I just love inspirational sayings from others! Depending on where I am in my day, I can open one of my little books, find a thought written by someone, and gain immediate inspiration to set me on my course again! When I read this excerpt, I was thinking about two things. First, after watching the Olympic Opening Ceremony last night, you can't help but look at all of those athletes and realize how they can make it happen by controlling their own destiny. Second, I was recently sitting in front of a BLANK canvas. Yes, fellow artists, you know that empty feeling we all have when we are just about to put that first mark on our canvas or paper! Then, you realize, it really is all up to me to make it happen!
Well, we hope to see you at this Thursday's meeting with a piece of art which has inspired you or one which just tells a story to you. We always have a relaxing time at this meeting just sharing and experiencing others work!
Also, we could use some help. Kathy Fisher will very shortly be turning over her responsibility for updating our Web page. She has done all the hard work in setting it up and now we just need someone who can make the updates required by other Guild members. It usually means updating the calendar, adding tips or announcements, etc. Kathy will easily teach you. Would someone please offer their services? I was thinking it was a good time for a transition before we hit the summer months and we don't have as much Web page activity. Please contact either myself or Kathy Fisher if you are interested!
Otherwise, be sure to review our Web page for upcoming classes or workshops. There will be sign-up sheets also on Thursday if you are able to come to the meeting!
See you on Thursday!
Lauren
Won’t you share with us!!!
This Thursday, February 18th, our members will be the presenters at our monthly meeting. Bring a favorite painting, one of your own, or one you want us to see. If it is one of your own, talk to us about its subject matter, your inspiration in creating it, the medium you used, and when it was completed. A favorite of yours, by another painter? Tell us how you found it, what you like most about it, and why you selected that painting to share.

January 2010
From Lauren Sisco, President
“The most glorious moments in your life are note the so-called days of success,
But rather those days when out of dejection and despair
You feel rise in you a challenge to life,
And the promise of future accomplishments.”
Gustave Flaubert
Happy New Year to all! Well, we have arrived to a brand new year of opportunities! Isn’t it funny how you can feel a sense of renewal simply by tossing the old calendar with all the checked off activities and starting a new calendar (Thank goodness for pencils!). Just as nature shows us, we are also included in a seasonal rebirth. In the midst of the snow and despite the extreme cold temperatures, my irises have decided they wish to return to life and start again. As artists, we all have the opportunity to start once again with all those projects we have been meaning to accomplish.
I’ll look forward to seeing many fresh faces next week at our monthly AGTV meeting, where we will greet Jerry’s Artarama. They will be showing us the latest in their product line.
As always, there will be a table set up where you can sign up for classes or workshops. Read ahead in this newsletter about the artists who will be teaching for us yet this year.
See you on Thursday, January 21st!
Lauren

Meet Our New Members
From Theresa Beyer—“My husband George and I moved to
I have always liked to renew things, paint walls, upholster, quilt, arrange flowers, sew clothes, and paint furniture before you would dare! When our oldest went to college, I decided to take art classes. I enjoyed them but was always intimated and never took the time to just enjoy creating art. I find it very relaxing and gratifying. I have taken beginning drawing with Lee
Edge, and she has made me enthusiastic again, even if I have not finished all my projects! It seems that family and travels just interfere with all of this fun.
The members of the Art Guild are so very talented. I hope some of it rubs off on me. I am looking forward to just drawing, painting and enjoying art, and you really don't have to worry about any competition from me!”
From Anita Lambert—“I am happy to be a member of the art group and look forward to my first meeting in January. I am eager to meet other members and to continue to learn how to be a better painter. (Actually, I don't call myself a painter or an artist - I am just a student).
I live in
For as long as I remember, I have been interested in and have enjoyed art. I remember winning a class contest for the best rabbit drawing in the 3rd grade. I felt so sad when a mean little classmate scribbled all over it with a crayon. I did recover and studied art history and art theory both in college and in graduate school, but during the family years, I had little time to actually draw or paint.
Both my husband and I loved art and began collecting while living in
Now that I am alone, I have found that drawing and painting (watercolor) are relaxing and rewarding. I hope to improve my knowledge and skill with watercolor and to meet people who share my love of art.”
From Elva Morin—“I became a part of the Guild because of Mary Lee Wilkinson. After attending a few of her watercolor classes in 2009, I was invited by Mary Lee to a meeting. Mary Lee has been very inspiring and encouraging. She's a great teacher and person.
My background is pretty ordinary and certainly not an exciting one, but I thank God everyday for a blessed life. I was born and raised in
Beginning in high school, my love for art has always been a part of my life, but until recently I never made it a priority. It seemed to always be on the back burner, taking a class or two here and there over the years. In time, my passion became watercolor - not an easy medium. Last year I ran across the Art Guild's internet site that listed a watercolor class. I contacted Mary Lee and have since taken 3 sessions from her. Being a part of the Guild motivates my commitment to art, and I look forward to being a part of it.”

From Benjamin Qualls & Melissa Ball at Stony Clay Station Pottery (Our November 2009 Program Presentation)
As the new year gets its start, we here at Stony Clay Station are getting ready for our "Handbuilding With Clay" classes. This is a 6 week course meeting once a week at our studio here in
The classes will be on Monday
Hope to hear from you soon!
From the
Carol Z. Brody Workshop
The cost of the workshop is $400 a day, plus mileage, room & board. She and her husband can stay with us. The cost goes down every time someone signs up. Carol would like around 16 people. This is what I figure at the moment: $400 +100 = $500 divided by 16= $31.25 per person, per day. The classes will be from
the Fireplace area.
The Workshop will be using (as on the supply list) 140 #, cold press, natural, white paper. I will be putting together an order of paper from ASW shortly. If you are interested, let me know.

Please don’t forget our Holiday Luncheon will be held this Thursday, December 17th at our usual meeting location in the Yacht Club. If you haven’t signed up and want to come, please do so. Ham and drinks will be provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. No business meeting will be conducted.
I just received a thank you note from the Woodworkers Club thanking us again for our participation in Toys for Tots. The Lenior City Sheriff did see an increase in requests for help as compared to last year. So, your participation would certainly make a difference for a child this season. Thank you again!
Our next meeting on January 21st will feature our annual visit from Jerry’s Artarama. You won’t want to miss seeing and learning about some of the latest art products. Harriet Howell is having a 3 day workshop January 28, 29 and 30 at Chota
Rec. Ctr. in acrylic (or you may use watercolor if you prefer). Her supply list is on the website, and the cost is $150 (plus a $5 workshop fee if you have not paid that fee in the last 12 months) and $170 for nonmembers. She is a wonderful teacher, and now is a great opportunity to drop a Christmas hint to family members for art supplies for her class. Please send your check to me at
Also, Golden has come out wth a new acrylic paint called OPEN which is slow drying and you can go to the Dick Blick website to check it out.
Other news: Anne Abgott emailed me to say that she is featured in the Artist Magazine Jan/Feb issue as well as the Watercolor Artist Magazine, so those of you who subscribe to these art magazines, take note! Also, please share this information with fellow guild members.
Anne is teaching a 3 day workshop in August, and we will have signup beginning in January. However, because of the popularity of her class we will require a deposit of $75 to hold your spot as her class is limited at this time to 20 students. This deposit will NOT BE REFUNDABLE AFTER JULY 1, so if you are not absolutely sure you will be able to take the workshop, you can sign up on the waiting list sheet. This is an unusual situation, however. A number of people outside of the Village have already requested to sign up for Anne's class,
and we have decreed that our members will have first option to sign up. We are certainly fortunate to have such a popular painter holding a workshop in

“The year which is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies … I do therefore, invite my fellow citizens … to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of thanksgiving and praise …”
Abraham Lincoln,
What a great tradition Abe Lincoln set in place for all of us to embrace! I do believe we get so caught up in the routine of life, we forget just where some of these traditions all started. Somehow, the reminder just slows the pace a bit and humbles us all. It would be awesome as a leader to have the opportunity to create an event which would be acknowledged forever.
Come join us on Thursday, November 19th for another memorable Art Guild meeting! Have you been curious about what goes on at Stony Clay Station in
Also, please don’t forget the opportunity to bring an unwrapped toy to this November meeting. The Toys for Tots campaign can sure use our help this year to help bring a blessing

November Program
Art Guild of
Local potter, Benjamin Qualls, will be the featured guest at the Art Guild of
Benjamin Qualls, as well as fellow artist, Melissa Ball, opened the Stony Clay Station on Highway 11 near Dixie Lee Junction in
Qualls has been working on pottery for seven years. A musician as well, he said he has always needed to do things with his hands. He apprenticed for a year with Jim Coffelt from First Impressions Pottery; Melissa apprenticed with Judy Jones Pottery, both located in Gatlinburg. Qualls spent 5 ½ years in an internship with Alewine Pottery.
At Stony Clay Station, the two artists produce handcrafted, stoneware pottery, which can be both decorative and practical. Their functional ware, with an emphasis on family mealtime, involves making beautiful things to eat off of and with, that make that meal time special. All the pieces are microwavable and dishwasher-safe.
As for his “pottery style”, Qualls says he makes solid forms with clean lines. “Melissa uses more organic shapes and forms. She likes manipulation of the clay.” Qualls says that sometimes he will throw the base, crafting its shape and then, Melissa will paint and apply the artistic elements needed to complete the project.
Qualls sees himself as modernizing the pottery form, a form begun in the area and in western
As he is demonstrating for the photo shoot, he starts “throwing” with 13 pounds of clay. (The term, “throwing a pot” refers to making pieces of pottery on a potter’s wheel; a process that Quall explains takes a long time to learn.) He states, “The first 1000 pots you make, you are going to hate; the next 10,000 you will like all right; in six years, you may be making things that are decent.” He adds that one of the more difficult parts to the pottery making process is centering the clay on the moving wheel to begin the shaping and wall formations that follow.
His normal process time from creation to completion of a piece of pottery is 2-3 weeks. However, he adds that weather can have an adverse affect on the curing process. Weather transitions, such as the dramatic shift in humidity we experienced several weeks ago, moving from very humid to very dry, left a whole rack of pottery pieces without any moisture, filled with cracks and splits.
His favorite pieces he has made are the highly textural pottery with the relief carving. His goal is to transition into the mixed media art form, using painting and print making techniques to enhance the pieces of pottery, some of which Melissa Ball has been working on already. He enjoys metal fabrication and would like to incorporate that into the pottery.
Presenting his pottery and as well as himself to the public is an important aspect of his work, one that he enjoys doing. He says that 70-80 percent of his business comes from art shows and farmer’s markets.
For the Art Guild presentation on November 19th, Qualls will be demonstrating the hand building basis for working with clay. He will be showing how to form practical things, such as pinch pots, coil pots, and cups and plates for gardens.
In January, Qualls will be offering a Beginning Hand Building Class at his Stony Clay Station studio. The sessions will be six weeks long and will cost $225, which includes the clay, tools, and firings.
Remember to bring an unwrapped toy to the meeting for the Toys for Tot drive.

My Dad had some artistic drawing talent. He created the family Christmas card for 25 years. I never took an art class until last fall when I took watercolor painting with Muriel Fawcett. Living next to the Smokies and near the lake--what an opportunity to see beauty!”
