Art Guild of Tellico Village

May Newsletter

May 2010

From Lauren Sisco, President

“The stage of emptying is a powerful place for learning.  There is much behind us now.     If we practice hindsight with alertness, we can see the big pattern.”

                                                                                                       Jeanne Carbonetti

There are conclusions to many aspects of our lives.   More closely to our souls, we somehow know when it is time to conclude a piece of art we have created.   We started with a vision and then proceeded to do the work to bring it to life.  Sometimes, we found obstacles which impeded our progress.   But, in the end, we did our best and set course for letting go of our work.
As our season comes to a close, I leave this office with even greater gratitude.  I am sincerely grateful for all our members and what each one brings to our Guild.   As hard as it can be to find volunteers to do roles or tasks, I was amazed at how so many unselfishly stepped forward to give a hand.   There are so many to name.   Please accept my thanks to all of you for your support and spirit!
I could not have led this organization this year without the incredible support and creative ideas from the rest of your Board.   Let me share some brief thoughts as I reflect on the year with these folks:
Sheila Goehring, Vice-President, coordinated and planned every meeting ensuring that the speakers were prepared and ready to roll on the day of our event.   I’ve had numerous comments from members on what great meetings we have had this year!   We averaged 40-50 members at each meeting.
Tutt Hoy, Recording Secretary, never missed a beat in summarizing not only our monthly meetings but also any board meeting held.   She also was a leader in working with Leslie Wells and Judy Smiegel in planning our brown bags.   Anybody who knows Tut, also knows of her innovative spirit with the life drawing class.
Kathy Simms, Corresponding Secretary, ensured thank you notes found their way to deserving individuals.   And, on occasion, sadly, words of comfort to those who were ill or experiencing a sense of loss.   Kathy also ensured we had goodies from volunteers at each of our meetings.
Gene Fischer, Treasurer, accurately reported our finances each month.   He instituted an audit of our books confirming no surprises to address.    Despite being the only male on the team, Gene was a trooper and always contributed!
Carol Koch, Workshop Chairman, coordinated four workshops for us.  There is much which goes on behind the scenes to make these happen and Carol always made it look easy!
Kathy Fisher, Class Chairman, makes class management look easy.  Once again, we take for granted what has to happen behind the scenes from supply management to coordination of the calendar to finding and aiding outside instructors to teach for us.    In addition, as past President, Kathy was invaluable providing historical perspective to the Board as we all worked through decision-making for the Guild.  Kathy also retained ownership of our Website and ensured it had the latest and greatest.  She also worked with the Quilters who offered to purchase 12 more screens!
Sharon Elmore, Publicity Chairman, is our rock.  Sharon has an undying spirit to help with our publicity needs.   Even though she finds it easy to interview and write our articles, we all know how much work it is to bring all this together.   She led all of our efforts to have yet another successful Spring Art Show!   Her enthusiasm affects us all, and I’ll never be able to thank her enough for her hard work!
In addition, I want to thank the following individuals for their special service:

Rosey Brehm, Membership Chairman, ensured we effectively transitioned new members.  We were blessed this year with many new members which had Rosey busily updating our directory and ensuring they are linked to all the services of the Guild.
Joe Williams … thank you for coordinating the library exhibits in addition to all the other ‘honey’ do’s I leaned on you for!
Mary Lee Wilkinson … thank you for being our historian and recording all of the Guild activities.  Thank you for coordinating our Chota exhibits!
ALL those volunteers who helped with the Spring Show this year …. too many to name … but I so observed what happens days and days before the show to watch the teaming which takes place.
All those who volunteered to prepare and teach a brown bag!
Cheryl Peyton for advice and counsel to so many members.   Your willingness to help is always appreciated!
I apologize to others I just know I might have missed to thank!    Ahhhhh …. I hate that but ALL of you have been so supportive and kind to me throughout the year.   I feel as though I just might have a few more friends playing it forward!    THANK YOU!
Our final meeting will be a luncheon at the Yacht Club on May 20th at 11:00.   Everyone bring a dish to share as AGTV provides the beverages.    We will have a good time as we vote in our new Board for next year.
            See you then!

                                               President--Lil Clinard
                                                   Vice-President/Program Chair--Teresa Mauch
                                                        Recording Secretary--Sheila Goehring
                                                             Corresponding Secretary--Kathy Simms
                                                                  Treasurer--Gene Fischer
                                                                        Class Chairman--Ginger Barthel
                                                                              Workshop Chairman--Tutt Hoy

Reaching out to all members!    We have two needs which need gracious volunteers to lead.  Please contact Lauren Sisco if you are interested!
Historian:    Mary Lee Wilkinson has handled this since forever and will be passing on to someone.    Simply, this is taking pictures at our key meetings and events and then creatively organizing in a scrapbook for future reference.   If someone wants to team on this with one being the photographer and the other doing the scrapbook, that is okay too!

Mural Coordinator:   Judee Andrews passed this one several weeks back, and a volunteer is still needed to fill this role.   When the Guild is contacted by outside organizations to ask for help with mural paintings, this person lead's the effort with many others to help!   Judee could fill you in on what is needed!

     Meet a new member:

Grey Perry-- My wife Nancy and I live in Rarity Bay since 1997. Before that, we raised our three children in the Boston area in Westford, MA and also Plymouth, MA; Nancy and I both grew up in Ithaca, NY.

I had an early interest in art from grade school when I won a small contest painting one of the panes in a large window in a local pharmacy. I took some special art courses at the high school when I was in middle school. I've had no formal training outside of some watercolor classes I took at University of Tennessee evening division, and some classes at the Hilton Head Art League when we visit there for a week each winter.

I paint in watercolor most of the time. I also enjoy pen and ink sketching, and am now beginning to try acrylics from watching Jerry Yarnell on television.  I have also done some clay sculpture. I am interested in entering some art shows to see how my work compares to others in the area.

I've also done some group painting with Jean Porter here at R. B.

April 2010

From Lauren Sisco, President

"It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful, but it is more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally we can do.   To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts.   We are tasked to make our lives, even in its details, worthy of the contemplation of our most elevated and critical hour."                 Henry David Thoreau                                                                                                                                                                                        I bought this book "Thoreau and the Art of Life".   The book is comprised of journal entries written by Thoreau.   His journal entries certainly reflected his deep beliefs in the experiences of nature.
When I read this excerpt from his journal, I reflected on how it has been quite a journey these last few months painting and preparing for our upcoming April show.  And while all of that was important, in the end, our show is everything about making someone's day.   They will come to our show with much anticipation on what they will be seeing.   But, we hope they walk away with an uplifted spirit and appreciation for our small attempt to change our world.
We will see you at our next monthly meeting on Thursday, April 8th.   Our last speaker for the season will be Denise Sanabria.   You will read more about her talents below.    Don't miss this one!
We will also be nominating our new officers.  They will then be voted into their positions at our May 20th luncheon.
            See you then!

Art Guild Meeting Thursday, April 8th

Knoxville Artist With Life Size Portraits Visits Art Guild

The Art Guild of Tellico Village welcomes Knoxville artist Denise Stewart-Sanabria at its April 8th monthly meeting.  Held on the upper floor of the Tellico Village Yacht Club, the Guild meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. with social time, followed by a short business meeting and then Stewart-Sanabria’s presentation.  She says she will be talking about “media, ideas, how ideas should lead to unconventional directions without traditional confines. My work wanders between 2 and 3D and installation, and encompasses a wide range of subjects and media. I talk about how ideas lead to process.”

Denise Stewart-Sanabria was born in Massachusetts and received her BFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has lived in Knoxville since 1986.  In the past five years, she has received over twenty awards from curators and directors at the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Knoxville Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga, and the National Portrait Gallery.  It is said of Stewart-Sanabria that she “paints hyper-realist ‘portraits’ of everything from produce to subversive jelly donuts. She also draws with charcoal on plywood, producing full-scale cut-out portraits of both vintage and contemporary people that she uses to create conceptual installations”.

Lori Waxman, an art critic for the Chicago Tribune, states, “If drawing traditionally provides an intimate medium through which to sketch, record, and transmit both the loosest and most precise of figurative detail, Denise Stewart-Sanabria’s practice turns that tradition on its penciled head. Life-size and larger-than-life-size, her charcoal on birch plywood drawings dwarf the viewer, existing as uncanny representations of average folks in real space”.

When asked to describe her subject matter, Stewart-Sanabria tells us, “I'm mainly a representational artist, though I do other experimental work that diverges from that.  I like social commentary and observation, and that can best be done from a figurative foundation”.

She explains her methods of painting: “I work with charcoal on plywood and various other mediums from graphite to ink on surfaces ranging from organza to paper to stone, bark and wood.  As a painter, I fluctuate from oil to slow drying acrylics depending on my deadlines.  I'll work with anything I can get my hands on so long as it doesn't decompose, however.

I also do installations and 3D work that can incorporate some weird stuff. I recently had someone offer to buy a drawing if I would remove it from the old window frame it was in, and I declined. The filthy glass that obscured half the drawing was made permanently filthy due to an application of glass sealant. After sealing the dirt, I realized there was also a dead fly stuck on the glass. This was a bonus. The drawing means nothing without these elements.”

She characterizes her style as “progressive hyper-realism”.

** From Sandra Washburn Workshop-Repoussage and Renaissance boxes. “For this workshop, I plan to use acrylic in applications either on heavy board or canvas (artist preference). I plan to incorporate a mixed media technique called repoussage, which involves reverse texturing of thin sheets of metal foil, then attaching these to the chosen support, either canvas or board, and, adding patinas, and  embellishing with acrylics, gold leaf, etc. This is the first time I have incorporated metals into an acrylic workshop. This mixed media lesson plan is borne of my recently acquired skills with metals and the compatibility of metals and mixed media.  Also, if time allows, I would like to delve into Renaissance boxes, using small stretched canvases that are 2" deep to make low relief sculptures. These boxes will also incorporate many of the materials we have used in the past for collage/mixed media, as well as the thin sheets of metal foil.”

All About Art

From Francie Entz:  Several AGTV members will be in an exhibit at The Hanson Gallery, April 2-30th.  AGTV artists are Lee Edge, Francie Entz, Mary Ann Valvoda, Laurie Szilvagyi, and Mary Lee Wilkinson.  The Hanson Gallery address is 5607 Kingston Pike in Knoxville.  Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 10 am – 5:30 pm and Saturday 10 am – 5 pm.

From Keith Harding:  Three of my images were juried into the “Through The Lens: New Potential in Print Photography at the Oak Ridge Art Center through May 1st-The inaugural exhibition in a new series of juried exhibitions showcasing the best work in the printed photographic arts.  The Center is located at 201 Badger Avenue in Oak Ridge.  The Gallery Hours are Tuesday-Friday from 9-5 and Saturday through Monday from 1-4.

From Lee Edge: I took paintings to the Art Emporium.  The Art Alliance director and staff set up a display at the City/County Building in Knoxville, at Gay and Main Streets.   I learned that two of my paintings were selected to hang in the show--one a pastel, the other a water color.  Art will be on display from March 1 through August.  This was not a juried show but rather a selection of art that presented a coherent theme of Knoxville and Tennessee scenes.

Tennessee Porcelain Artists Convention--April 22, 23, and 24th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Knoxville.  The public is invited to all events.  There will be a display and sale of hand painted china.

in the fragrant wood.”

Did the last name of this author catch your attention as well?   My curiosity led me to Google just who was Gertrude Jekyll.   As it turns out, her younger brother, Reverend Walter Jekyll, was a friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, who did borrow the family name for his famous novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde!   More importantly, however, Gertrude was a “designer of plantings”.  Up until her death in 1932, she was a huge contributor of the Arts and Crafts movement as a result of her painterly approach to the arrangement of the gardens she created.   She evidently made her mark with her Impressionistic-style gardening schemes.  Prior to her deteriorating eyesight, she was a painter and watercolourist.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_Jekyll
It is no surprise to any artist to know how important our surroundings are to inspire us with our art styles.  Spring is one of those seasons which just seems to wake up the soul, giving us even more subject matter to work within our studios!
If the outdoors doesn’t get you going, check out one of the upcoming classes or workshops!   We still have some great offerings before the summer months begin.

Also, we are just a month away from our annual Spring Art Show.   If you plan on showing, please be sure your membership is current (Rosey Brehm) and your application is submitted to Sharon Elmore by Monday, March 29th.
See you this Thursday the 18th when we enjoy the artistic pleasures of Lyda Plemons!

Local Oil Painter Visits Tellico Village Art Guild

Local artist, Lyda Plemons, will be the guest presenter at the Art Guild’s March 18th monthly meeting.  Beginning with a social hour at 9:30 am on the upper floor of the Tellico Village Yacht Club, members will then hold a short business meeting before listening to Plemons talk about color and the iris, especially its history as the state flower of Tennessee.  She will also be giving an oil painting demonstration.  Guests are always welcome.

Lyda Plemons has been painting for over 35 years.  She has trained with national artists Mary Mueller, Larry Blovits, George Bemis, and other outstanding instructors.  She has had several One Woman Shows, received many awards and ribbons, and had her work featured in magazines and newspapers.

While at one time, Plemons approached her artwork in a more business minded manner, worrying about what pieces would sell and how many pieces to paint, she says she now paints for enjoyment.  When she considers painting a particular piece, she asks herself, “How much am I going to enjoy it?”

She has become more involved in volunteering and sharing her art.  She paints murals for her church—8 feet high and 40 feet long, changing them every few months.  She puts on workshops for children and adults.  Three hours a week she teaches at the Asbury Nursing Facility.

Plemons enjoys drawing and several media with a “unique ability to paint realistic flowers in oil.”  She credits this to her first instructor, Blanche McGee and her love of flower gardening.  It is no surprise that she chooses florals as a favorite to paint, often picking a particular flower to paint as it makes its seasonal appearance in her garden.  Her painting subjects also include birds and things found in nature.  She mentions that her nine-year old grandson has a few suggestions of his own for things for her to paint, the results of his outside explorations.  In addition to her still life paintings and landscapes, she paints portraits, often of family members and neighbors.

She prefers to paint in the early morning hours between 7:00 and 10:00.  In the summer, she sets up her easel outside, near her flowers, whenever possible.  She does have a studio a mile and a half away that she enjoys using for concentrating on “serious things”.  There she can bring her photographs that she takes that help her capture subjects and aspects she wants to include in her paintings or finish a painting she has begun outside.

When asked, she characterizes her style as realistic but feels her backgrounds are impressionistic with a dapple of color and atmospheric effect.

*George Rothery, who works at Jerry's Artarama, will teach a 2 day workshop on Painting Water (Your choice of Media) on May 6 and 8 from 9 - 4.  The cost of this workshop is $105 and includes the AGTV fee.  If you are interested, please email Kathy Fisher at k18fisher@gmail.com.  A $50 deposit is required and is refundable up to 2 weeks prior to the class.

From Cheryl Mundle-My address is 240 Goldcrest Drive in Vonore.  I have lived the longest in the Washington, D.C. area.  I have always loved art but was busy with many other commitments to explore it, until lately.  I am interested in all aspects of art-until I find the one that I have a passion for.

All About Art

From Muriel Faucett:  Chota Exhibit

The AGTV winter exhibit has just been hung at Chota Rec. Center. Have you noticed it's difficult to get a parking space at Chota lately? This is a nice problem. It means our exhibit hallway gets a lot of traffice from pickle ball players, line dancers, quilters, bridge players and other groups.

Be thinking about exhibiting a painting or two for our spring hanging. There have been sales during each of our exhibits. It's a good way to motivate yourself to paint, and have an audience for your efforts.

From Lauren—an email from one of our workshop teachers-Paul deMarrais:

“Hi Lauren- I would like to invite your members to an opening of my show at the Fountain City Art Center in Fountain City in North Knoxville. The opening will be on Feb. 26, 2010 from 6:30 PM- 8:30 PM, and the show will be up until April 2. I will show about 20 paintings both in pastel and in a new technique where I liquefy pastel with acrylic matte medium to create acrylic paintings.  Thanks and take care”......Paul

From Lee Edge: I took paintings to the Art Emporium.  The Art Alliance director and staff set up a display at the City/County Building in Knoxville, at Gay and Main Streets.   The reception area of Mayor Haslam's office and the hall leading to his office are the locations for the art exhibit.  I learned that two of my paintings were selected to hang in the show--one a pastel, the other a water color.  Art will be on display from March 1 through August.  This was not a juried show but rather a selection of art that presented a coherent theme of Knoxville and Tennessee scenes.

Life Painting Group

The Life Painting Group meets on Friday mornings from 9:00 to 12:30 at Chota, Room A.  We hire a live model (clothed) who will sit for us for four to five weeks, depending on the agreement we make when hiring.  We sign up and PAY OUR MODEL FEE IN ADVANCE, so that we know we have enough people to put together a session--usually $25 for a four-week session.  The amount can be slightly more or less, depending on the number of participants. If you are interested in participating with this group, please contact Tutt Hoy (tuttlarsenhoy@charter.net or 865-657-9369) or Mary Ann Valvoda (mvalvoda@aol.com or 865-408-0737).

Please email me (wjelmore@charter.net) or call me (458-6354) to let me know your art participation news.

Would you be willing to help with this?

Lauren received this email:  “Last year the Art Guild helped with Camp Tellico.  I am checking to see if your group would like to help again this year.  Last year the Art Guild came in for 1 day and helped the children make bird houses, recycled egg carton molds, and on the second week, the children painted clowns.  The children love the hands on projects the most.  The Camp date is July 5th-9th July 12--from 11 am - 3 pm.  I am working on the schedule of event now and trying to line everyone up.  If you are interested, I would love to have the Art Guild participate again.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank You.” Larissa Lownsdale, Chota Recreation CenterInterested?   Call Lauren—458-3575.

February 2010

From Lauren Sisco, President

"Man is buffeted by circumstances so long as he believes himself to be the creature of outside conditions, but when he realizes that he is a creative power, and that he may command the hidden soil and seeds of his being out of which circumstances grow, he then becomes the rightful master of himself."
James Allen

I just love inspirational sayings from others!    Depending on where I am in my day, I can open one of my little books, find a thought written by someone, and gain immediate inspiration to set me on my course again!   When I read this excerpt, I was thinking about two things.   First, after watching the Olympic Opening Ceremony last night, you can't help but look at all of those athletes and realize how they can make it happen by controlling their own destiny.   Second, I was recently sitting in front of a BLANK canvas.    Yes, fellow artists, you know that empty feeling we all have when we are just about to put that first mark on our canvas or paper!    Then, you realize, it really is all up to me to make it happen!

Well, we hope to see you at this Thursday's meeting with a piece of art which has inspired you or one which just tells a story to you.   We always have a relaxing time at this meeting just sharing and experiencing others work!

Also, we could use some help.   Kathy Fisher will very shortly be turning over her responsibility for updating our Web page.   She has done all the hard work in setting it up and now we just need someone who can make the updates required by other Guild members.   It usually means updating the calendar, adding tips or announcements, etc.   Kathy will easily teach you.    Would someone please offer their services?    I was thinking it was a good time for a transition before we hit the summer months and we don't have as much Web page activity.    Please contact either myself or Kathy Fisher if you are interested!

Otherwise, be sure to review our Web page for upcoming classes or workshops.  There will be sign-up sheets also on Thursday if you are able to come to the meeting!

See you on Thursday!

Lauren

Won’t you share with us!!!

This Thursday, February 18th, our members will be the presenters at our monthly meeting.  Bring a favorite painting, one of your own, or one you want us to see.  If it is one of your own, talk to us about its subject matter, your inspiration in creating it, the medium you used, and when it was completed.  A favorite of yours, by another painter?  Tell us how you found it, what you like most about it, and why you selected that painting to share.

Our New Members

My name is Yvonne Bartholomew-Thomas. (hyphenated)  “I have lived in Seymour since June 2007. I am from Humboldt in west Tennessee. My mother and I have always wanted to live in the mountains, and so when my father died of lung cancer in August, 2006, my husband and I began looking at houses for the three of us. (My father had never wanted to move). We finally found a house in Seymour with a mountain view, and the three of us moved in it together. Then, in December 2007, my husband had a severe stroke. After months of therapy, he is finally able to walk again although not at great distances. He still has extreme trouble with communication, and his hand is still paralyzed. He cannot be left alone and must accompany me everywhere.

I have always like art - from coloring books and drawing to being the class artist. I took a couple of summer classes when I was 8 and 9 in pastels at Jackson State Community College (west Tennessee). I majored in art at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin (middle Tennessee) and then Digital Animation at MTSU. I have settled into oil on canvas, watercolor, and pastels. Realizing I will never make a living at this, my main enjoyment (beyond the painting process itself) is adding award ribbons to my wall and enjoying the company of other artists.

I've loved art from childhood.  My husband and I have bought a number of original art pieces (oil, watercolor, and sculpture) through the years.  I recently enrolled in Mary Lee Wilkinson's watercolor class as a beginner, and I have bright hopes that with her guidance and encouragement I can eventually learn the techniques to produce some pleasing artwork.

January 2010

From Lauren Sisco, President

“The most glorious moments in your life are note the so-called days of success,
But rather those days when out of dejection and despair
You feel rise in you a challenge to life,
And the promise of future accomplishments.”
Gustave Flaubert

Happy New Year to all!   Well, we have arrived to a brand new year of opportunities!    Isn’t it funny how you can feel a sense of renewal simply by tossing the old calendar with all the checked off activities and starting a new calendar (Thank goodness for pencils!).   Just as nature shows us, we are also included in a seasonal rebirth.  In the midst of the snow and despite the extreme cold temperatures, my irises have decided they wish to return to life and start again.   As artists, we all have the opportunity to start once again with all those projects we have been meaning to accomplish.

I’ll look forward to seeing many fresh faces next week at our monthly AGTV meeting, where we will greet Jerry’s Artarama.   They will be showing us the latest in their product line.

As always, there will be a table set up where you can sign up for classes or workshops.   Read ahead in this newsletter about the artists who will be teaching for us yet this year.

DON’T FORGET to mark your calendars for our annual April show which will be held on April 17 and 18 (set-up will be on April 16).   Many of you will want to plan on showcasing your work.   But, ALL can help in some small way either with set-up, hosting, food, etc.   More details will be following as we get closer.

See you on Thursday, January 21st!

Lauren

Art Guild Welcomes Jerry’s Artist Supplies and Materials Representatives

The Art Guild of Tellico Village has invited staff members from Jerry’s Artarama to their January 21st monthly meeting which is held on the upper floor of the Yacht Club in Tellico Village.  On the 21st, Guild members will gather for a social time at 9:30, with a short business meeting to follow, and then onto a presentation by Jerry’s.

“Jerry’s Artarama owner Jeff Shoham says his store has “more than 28,000 items in stock, from a pack of crayons to specialized paints and everything in between.”  He continues, “The store and its talented staff can take a painter, for instance, from concept to finished, framed piece.”  Art Guild members will be introduced to the latest products and be able to ask questions about art supplies that are used in their particular artistic endeavors.  Guests are always welcome.

Meet Our New Members

From Theresa Beyer—“My husband George and I moved to Tellico Village in December, 2000 from Troy, Michigan.  We have lived in Michigan all of our lives.  We now live in the Chota Woods neighborhood and have a great view of Tellico Lake and the Yacht Club. George and I have three children, all married, and have five grandchildren and a new baby on the way.
I have always liked to renew things, paint walls, upholster, quilt, arrange flowers, sew clothes, and paint furniture before you would dare! When our oldest went to college, I decided to take art classes.  I enjoyed them but was always intimated and never took the time to just enjoy creating art.  I find it very relaxing and gratifying.  I have taken beginning drawing with Lee
Edge, and she has made me enthusiastic again, even if I have not finished all my projects!  It seems that family and travels just interfere with all of this fun.

The members of the Art Guild are so very talented.  I hope some of it rubs off on me. I am looking forward to just drawing, painting and enjoying art, and you really don't have to worry about any competition from me!”

From Anita Lambert—“I am happy to be a member of the art group and look forward to my first meeting in January.  I am eager to meet other members and to continue to learn how to be a better painter.  (Actually, I don't call myself a painter or an artist - I am just a student).

I live in Rarity Bay (470 Cormorant Drive, Vonore, TN 37885).  I have been living here for 8 years (alone for nearly 5 years after losing my husband in 2005).  Before moving to TN., we lived in Upstate New York for over 15 years.

For as long as I remember, I have been interested in and have enjoyed art.  I remember winning a class contest for the best rabbit drawing in the 3rd grade.  I felt so sad when a mean little classmate scribbled all over it with a crayon.  I did recover and studied art history and art theory both in college and in graduate school, but during the family years, I had little time to actually draw or paint.

Both my husband and I loved art and began collecting while living in Europe for 8 years.  We were fortunate to have visited many wonderful art museums during our travels there.

Now that I am alone, I have found that drawing and painting (watercolor) are relaxing and rewarding.  I hope to improve my knowledge and skill with watercolor and to meet people who share my love of art.”

From Elva Morin—“I became a part of the Guild because of Mary Lee Wilkinson.  After attending a few of her watercolor classes in 2009, I was invited by Mary Lee to a meeting.  Mary Lee has been very inspiring and encouraging.  She's a great teacher and person.

My background is pretty ordinary and certainly not an exciting one, but I thank God everyday for a blessed life.  I was born and raised in California.  I met my husband (Pat), from Maine, through the military.  We raised two sons in Fresno, California and just prior to his retirement, decided we wanted something different.  That "something different" ended up to be Greenback, Tennessee - a much slower pace in many ways and not so much in other ways.         After Pat's "retirement", I quit my job at an accounting firm as administrative assistant (20years), and we moved to Greenback 4 years ago and love it - the people - the landscape.  Pat and I have driven across country 3 times and believe East Tennessee is the prettiest part.  I find people through out the country as receptive as your smile.  A smile is not simple an expression but a sincere gesture from the heart.

Beginning in high school, my love for art has always been a part of my life, but until recently I never made it a priority.  It seemed to always be on the back burner, taking a class or two here and there over the years.  In time, my passion became watercolor - not an easy medium.  Last year I ran across the Art Guild's internet site that listed a watercolor class.  I contacted Mary Lee and have since taken 3 sessions from her.  Being a part of the Guild motivates my commitment to art, and I look forward to being a part of it.”

All About Art

From Benjamin Qualls & Melissa Ball at Stony Clay Station Pottery (Our November 2009 Program Presentation)

As the new year gets its start, we here at Stony Clay Station are getting ready for our "Handbuilding With Clay" classes. This is a 6 week course meeting once a week at our studio here in Lenoir City. These are classes for individuals 18 years and up. We will be exploring different methods of handbuilt functional and sculptural stoneware pottery.

The classes will be on Monday 10 a.m. till noon, Tuesday 6 p.m. till 8 p.m. and Wednesday 7 p.m. till 9 p.m. starting February 1st and running until March 10th. The cost is $250 per person and includes 25 pounds of clay to start with and all the necessary tools for the craft, which will be yours at the end of the class. Classes will be kept to 6 people per class, so sign up fast to guarantee your spot. To contact us for more info you can email us at stonyclaystation@live.com or call us Tuesday thru Saturday 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. @ 865-988-3993. Leave a message if we don't answer, and we'll get back to you.
Hope to hear from you soon!

From the Little Tennessee River Artists and Jean Porter:

Carol Z. Brody Workshop
The cost of the workshop is $400 a day, plus mileage, room & board.  She and her husband can stay with us. The cost goes down every time someone signs up. Carol would like around 16 people. This is what I figure at the moment: $400 +100 = $500 divided by 16= $31.25 per person, per day. The classes will be from 9am - 4pm on Wed, Thurs, and Fri.  Friday night we will have a "Dinner Party" at the club as a group and put our favorite painting on the mantel in
the Fireplace area.
The Workshop will be using (as on the supply list) 140 #, cold press, natural, white paper. I will be putting together an order of paper from ASW shortly. If you are interested, let me know.

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth,
For the touch of a friendly hand
And for a talk beside the fire:
It is the time for home. “
Edith Sitwell

I am just a Southern girl, raised in Atlanta, where the ‘s’ word was never used or seen very often.   So, my amazement with ‘snow’ (there …. I said it) was always with the knowledge if we did get any on the ground, it would never last!   I learned, here in Tellico, whenever I said I hoped we would get some snow, I was met with much disagreement!    Now, that I’ve seen what happens with the latest bout of snow up in Buffalo, NY and elsewhere, I understand that fear!     So, the above quote purposely excluded snow and just focuses on many opportunities we have over the next couple of months to snuggle inside and get those projects done we have been meaning to do!

Please don’t forget our Holiday Luncheon will be held this Thursday, December 17th at our usual meeting location in the Yacht Club.   If you haven’t signed up and want to come, please do so.   Ham and drinks will be provided.   Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.   No business meeting will be conducted.

I just received a thank you note from the Woodworkers Club thanking us again for our participation in Toys for Tots.  The Lenior City Sheriff did see an increase in requests for help as compared to last year.   So, your participation would certainly make a difference for a child this season.   Thank you again!

Our next meeting on January 21st will feature our annual visit from Jerry’s Artarama.   You won’t want to miss seeing and learning about some of the latest art products.     Before the meeting, please be sure to check the side table for available classes and workshops to re-energize your artistic abilities in 2010!

See you at the Holiday Luncheon!

Harriet Howell is having a 3 day workshop January 28, 29 and 30 at Chota
Rec. Ctr. in acrylic (or you may use watercolor if you prefer).  Her supply list is on the website, and the cost is $150 (plus a $5 workshop fee if you have not paid that fee in the last 12 months) and $170 for nonmembers.  She is a wonderful teacher, and now is a great opportunity to drop a Christmas hint to family members for art supplies for her class.  Please send your check to me at 117 Okema Lane, Loudon 37774, and please call me at 408-0820 with any questions.

Also, Golden has come out wth a new acrylic paint called OPEN which is slow drying and you can go to the Dick Blick website to check it out.
Other news:  Anne Abgott emailed me to say that she is featured in the Artist Magazine Jan/Feb issue as well as the Watercolor Artist Magazine, so those of you who subscribe to these art magazines, take note!  Also, please share this information with fellow guild members.

Anne is teaching a 3 day workshop in August, and we will have signup beginning in January.  However, because of the popularity of her class we will require a deposit of $75 to hold your spot as her class is limited at this time to 20 students.  This deposit will NOT BE REFUNDABLE AFTER JULY 1, so if you are not absolutely sure you will be able to take the workshop, you can sign up on the waiting list sheet.  This is an unusual situation, however.  A number of people outside of the Village have already requested to sign up for Anne's class,
and we have decreed that our members will have first option to sign up. We are certainly fortunate to have such a popular painter holding a workshop in Tellico Village!!!   Please call me if you have questions.

Warm wishes from Carol Koch

Meet Our New Members

From Sandra Bokan:  “I am excited to become a member. As I stated to Helen, I am very limited to being able to attend your monthly meetings for I work during the week as the accountant for Whitestone Country Inn.

Currently, I reside in Loudon and have been for about eleven years. Before that, I moved from Chicago as a teenager to Lenoir City. I have always loved art and began painting while still in high school but not getting serious until my child got grown. I currently work in watercolor, but I have experience in pastels, also.

I feel the need to support my local art guild, and I am currently a member of the Athens Center for the Arts. I look forward to attending classes you offer and am anxious to meet fellow artists.

            Thank you once more.”

We have lived in the here for a year and a half.  I am originally from Ohio, the Buckeye State, where I was a special education teacher and supervisor for more than 30 years. I have been designing and making jewelry for about 15 years.  I plan to continue to pursue my interest in jewelry and may explore other areas as opportunities present themselves.  We will be out of state on and off until spring when I plan to start attending our meetings again.”

From Lauren Sisco, President

“The year which is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies … I do therefore, invite my fellow citizens … to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of thanksgiving and praise …”

                                                                           Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863
What a great tradition Abe Lincoln set in place for all of us to embrace!  I do believe we get so caught up in the routine of life, we forget just where some of these traditions all started.   Somehow, the reminder just slows the pace a bit and humbles us all.  It would be awesome as a leader to have the opportunity to create an event which would be acknowledged forever.
Come join us on Thursday, November 19th for another memorable Art Guild meeting!   Have you been curious about what goes on at Stony Clay Station in Lenior City?  Benjamin Qualls of the Stony Clay Station on Hwy. 11 will share his art of working with clay and just what goes on behind those walls!
Also, please don’t forget the opportunity to bring an unwrapped toy to this November meeting.  The Toys for Tots campaign can sure use our help this year to help bring a blessing

to a child.                                              See you on November 19th!

November Program

Art Guild of Tellico Village Welcomes Local Potter

Local potter, Benjamin Qualls, will be the featured guest at the Art Guild of Tellico Village’s monthly meeting held on Thursday morning, November 19th.  The group will be meeting at 9:30 on the upper floor of the Tellico Village Yacht Club starting with a social time, followed by a short business meeting, and then Qualls’ pottery making demonstration.  Guests are always welcome.

Benjamin Qualls, as well as fellow artist, Melissa Ball, opened the Stony Clay Station on Highway 11 near Dixie Lee Junction in Lenoir City in June 2008, having first produced pieces of pottery out of their studio beginning in January 2008.

Qualls has been working on pottery for seven years.  A musician as well, he said he has always needed to do things with his hands. He apprenticed for a year with Jim Coffelt from First Impressions Pottery; Melissa apprenticed with Judy Jones Pottery, both located in Gatlinburg.  Qualls spent 5 ½ years in an internship with Alewine Pottery.

At Stony Clay Station, the two artists produce handcrafted, stoneware pottery, which can be both decorative and practical.  Their functional ware, with an emphasis on family mealtime, involves making beautiful things to eat off of and with, that make that meal time special.  All the pieces are microwavable and dishwasher-safe.

As for his “pottery style”, Qualls says he makes solid forms with clean lines.  “Melissa uses more organic shapes and forms.  She likes manipulation of the clay.”  Qualls says that sometimes he will throw the base, crafting its shape and then, Melissa will paint and apply the artistic elements needed to complete the project.

Qualls sees himself as modernizing the pottery form, a form begun in the area and in western Carolina in the late 1790’s as traditional pottery.  He continues, “Working with clay is one of the last forms of alchemy left.” His mentor, Jim Coffelt, calls it “turning mud into gold”.  Qualls enjoys taking the stiff mud to create forms.  He sees so many possibilities.  For his glazes, he uses lots of iron, cobalt, and copper to make the colors.

As he is demonstrating for the photo shoot, he starts “throwing” with 13 pounds of clay.  (The term, “throwing a pot” refers to making pieces of pottery on a potter’s wheel; a process that Quall explains takes a long time to learn.)  He states, “The first 1000 pots you make, you are going to hate; the next 10,000 you will like all right; in six years, you may be making things that are decent.”  He adds that one of the more difficult parts to the pottery making process is centering the clay on the moving wheel to begin the shaping and wall formations that follow.

His normal process time from creation to completion of a piece of pottery is 2-3 weeks.  However, he adds that weather can have an adverse affect on the curing process.  Weather transitions, such as the dramatic shift in humidity we experienced several weeks ago, moving from very humid to very dry, left a whole rack of pottery pieces without any moisture, filled with cracks and splits.

His favorite pieces he has made are the highly textural pottery with the relief carving.  His goal is to transition into the mixed media art form, using painting and print making techniques to enhance the pieces of pottery, some of which Melissa Ball has been working on already.  He enjoys metal fabrication and would like to incorporate that into the pottery.

Presenting his pottery and as well as himself to the public is an important aspect of his work, one that he enjoys doing.  He says that 70-80 percent of his business comes from art shows and farmer’s markets.

For the Art Guild presentation on November 19th, Qualls will be demonstrating the hand building basis for working with clay.  He will be showing how to form practical things, such as pinch pots, coil pots, and cups and plates for gardens.

In January, Qualls will be offering a Beginning Hand Building Class at his Stony Clay Station studio.  The sessions will be six weeks long and will cost $225, which includes the clay, tools, and firings.

Remember to bring an unwrapped toy to the meeting for the Toys for Tot drive.

Our Artists at Work--from Mary Lee Wilkinson and FrancieEntz

The Fine Arts Market was held at the Chota Recreation Center on Saturday, November 7th and was a resounding success. The works of 20 artists from the Guild were displayed in Room A, and the variety made for a colorful and interesting presentation. Many Tellico residents and others enjoyed browsing and speaking to the artists while shopping. Refreshments were served in the festive Holiday atmosphere. Co-chairs, Francie Entz and Mary Lee Wilkinson, report that proceeds from the 6 hour sale were just under $5100, netting the POA 20%, or about $1,000.  The Art Guild wishes to thank the local communities for supporting our artists.

Thanks to: Mary Lee Wilkinson, Mary Ann Valvoda, Caryn Laymon, Mary Sarar, Linda Johnson, Tutt Hoy, Muriel Fawcett, Mary Wilbourne, Lauren Sisco, Sheila Goerhring, Kathy Fisher, Joe Williams, Judy Phillips, Harriet Schneider, Francie Entz, John Masters, Judy Carlson, Mary Mulherin, and Elaine Campbell for participating, baking, and distributing flyers; Mike Caminiti, Joe Williams, Tom Johnson, John Masters, Mary Ann Valvoda, Muriel Fawcett for setting up and tearing down the show; Roger Entz, Doug Laymon, and Jim Valvoda for setting up and taking down the signs and balloons; Kathy Simms and Rosey Brehm for managing the refreshment table; and Mary Lee, Francie, Sharon Elmore, and Kathy Fisher for advertising.

I think the Guild owes a HUGE THANK YOU to Joe Williams, a totally unassuming hero. Without his behind-the-scenes support, it would have been very difficult to have hung FAM as well as the Lenoir City show, as he transports the screens hither and yon.  Additionally, he designed, built, and paid for the platform for the figure drawing group that meets on Fridays.
                                                                                                                 Francie

Our Artists at Work—an award for their efforts

The Art Guild received a 2009 Honor Award from the POA for creating and painting an artistic representation of what the Good Samaritan did for those in need, on the walls of the Good Samaritan Center in Lenoir City.  Led by the drawings of Art Guild member, Judee Andrews, nine Art Guild members painted scenes around the center portraying what the Good Samaritan Center is all about to the community.  Special thanks to Judee, Nancy Campbell, Muriel Fawcett, Kathy Fisher, Gene Fischer, Mary Mulherin, Cheryl Peyton, Kathy Simms, Leslie Wells, and Mary Lee Wilkinson.

Nick Farrell has lived in Rarity Bay for ten years.  He came to this area from Green Bay, Wisconsin where he lived for 35 years.   He began his art training at Jean Porter’s art classes with Joe Trout in the fall of 2008.  He is interested in watercolor.

Linda Gaston tells us she has lived in the Kahite neighborhood of Vonore for two years.  “We moved here from Louisiana’s Bayou country, our home town.  I became interested in art about twenty years ago, starting in folk art, advancing to oils on canvas, after taking one workshop.  Upon building our 4th house, I began doing painting techniques on the walls and distressing furniture and cabinets.  Then, I started painting murals on my walls and faux brick and stone in my home here, as well as distressing cabinets.  I have also done acrylics on canvas, which is now my main interest.  I love to see demonstrations of acrylic works and have dabbled a bit in watercolor.  I am mostly self-taught, not a workshop taker, but there’s still hope, if my interest is peaked on a subject.  I have really enjoyed the few meetings I have attended at the Yacht Club and look forward to more.”

Sharron Heenan informs us, “I live in Lenoir City TN with my husband Patrick, and we have lived here for two years this November!  We lived in Iowa for eight years!  I have drawn and painted as long as I can remember. It was a gift, even as a child.  I am interested in pursuing oil painting and want to participate in the Spring Art Show in April. I am also very interested in learning as much as I can at the meetings and from fellow members of the Guild.”

Jan Kastens lives at 402 Catoosa Lane in the Tanasi Point Neighborhood.  She tells us, “We have lived at this address for 5 years; however, we have lived in the village for 6 years.  The first year we rented while we built our house.  Prior to moving here, I lived in Dexter, MI for 13 years, where I met my husband.  Prior to that, I lived in Denver, CO for 17 years--Denver is where my children were raised and attended school.  My daughter and three pets still reside in Denver and my son, his wife and three children live in Cheyenne, WY.

I have always enjoyed art shows and museums and love to interior decorate my home.  When I retired, one of my goals was to take a drawing class to develop any skills I may have.  Several of my Tellico Village friends (Lauren Sisco, especially) have encouraged me to take classes and to join the Art Guild.  So after retiring a year ago, here I am.

My art interests are open; however, I am interested in jewelry making, floral arrangements, oil painting, and pen and ink drawing.  I will just have to see how my talents grow through education and classes.  I am enjoying Lee Edge's Beginning Drawing and plan to participate in the brown bag sessions and other educational opportunities.

From Kathy Kutschera:  “I live on Ootsima Way, two doors away from the Rec Center.  We have been here for 7 years, and we love life in the Village, as well as its inhabitants.  I lived in CT my whole life.  Prior to moving here, my husband, Bob, and I lived in Bolton, CT (north east of Hartford), for 8 years.  I lived in the following Conn. communities (most recent listed first): Manchester (22 yrs), Fairfield, West Haven, South Windsor (graduated from SWHS), East Hampton, and Danielson.

My Dad had some artistic drawing talent.  He created the family Christmas card for 25 years.  I never took an art class until last fall when I took watercolor painting with Muriel Fawcett.  This year I have been taking drawing with Lee Edge.  I love nature's beauty and hope to be able to capture it either in watercolor or another medium.  Living next to the Smokies and near the lake--what an opportunity to see beauty!”

From Lauren Sisco, President

What a beautiful summer we had this year!    I just can't believe it went by so fast!   And, here we are kicking off another Art Guild season!   I am so proud to be associated with such talented people.    I never would have dreamed moving here six years ago that I would have found such a wonderful organization to join in the Village.
I was no less disappointed when I started working with the new Board slated for this coming year's activities.   There is such creativity and energy.   I have a hard time keeping up!    In any event, I think you will find lots of opportunities to grow your knowledge at all levels of art this year.   We have already scheduled some exciting, new speakers.    Our first speaker, Katie Kinney, will be sharing how to maximize your value as an artist.  Often times, we overlook how to promote our work when we are so busy creating!
Our membership drive kicks off this month.   I hope I can count on your support in prompt payment of your annual dues, and most importantly, any updates to your address, e-mail, phone, etc.
    See you on September 17th!

 September Program

The Art Guild of Tellico Village is excited to have Katie Kinney as guest speaker on Sept 17 at their monthly meeting.  Ms. Kinney will speak on “Mazimizing your Dollar Value as an Artist”.   Her presentation will include effective presentation of art, marketing and branding it, finding funding, pricing art, and how to sell in a weakened economy.

Raised in New England, Katie Kinney studied theatre at the University of Vermont and also holds a degree in business.   She spent 8 years in the navy and has traveled extensively as a result.  She currently has her own studio-3 Chairs Studio, specializing in mixed media and photography.  She is president of Fine Arts Blount County and working hard to promote Art Reach programs throughout the county.

Ms. Kinney is the recipient of many awards, the latest of which is a First Place in Mixed Media at the 2009 Arts in the Park in Blount County as well as Runner up in Photography.

Monthly Art Guild meetings are held at 9:30 on the third Thursday of each month.  Visitors are always welcome!                                Submitted by Judy Smigiel, Publicity Chair

Mary Lee taught art in the Michigan Public School system for 15 years, and has been painting in watercolors for over 35 years. She has been teaching adults in Rarity Bay and Tellico Village for 5 years.

Beginner/Intermediate Watercolor class will be appropriate for the beginner who has never painted, as well as the art student who has accomplished the basics and beyond. Individual attention and demonstrations will be given to acquaint the student with the art of watercolor. Emphasis will be placed on step by step progress, "gentle critiques"
and the fun of learning new techniques. Cost for each 5 wk. session is $90. Your check to Mary Lee Wilkinson, 126 Chota Shores Way, will reserve your place in the class. An equipment fee of $5 needs to be paid to the Art Guild the first day of class. For more information and materials list, please contact Mary Lee at mlart@charter.net or 458-1179.

Lee Edge’s credentials include art education in public schools throughout the U S for more than 30 years, and she has received numerous awards.

Beginning Drawing Class: The facilitator of the class, Lee Edge, will focus on the basics of drawing including perspective (creating a 3-D effect on a flat surface), line and contour drawing, value drawing (drawing in gray shades from black to white) to further increase a 3-D quality in a drawing, as well as measuring techniques which are used by artists to verify proportion.  Value drawings will be rendered in charcoal and pencil.  Subject matter will include still-life and personal photo references.  All work produced in the class will be original, not copied.

Continued Drawing Classes: Media and subject matter are diverse in this class since students of various levels of experience are welcome, and instruction is individualized.  Students and teacher, Lee Edge, will determine goals.  One focus of the class, however, will be an introduction to Plein Air drawing and field trips will be planned, weather permitting.  A partial listing of the media is:  pen and ink, charcoal, color pencil; pastel.  Students who are out of town and wish to enter later than Sept. 26 are welcome.  All class products will be original, not copied.

Lee requests that a deposit of $50 be sent to her to hold your spot by September 18.  Deposit checks will not be cashed until after the first class meeting, at which time the balance of the fee is due.  If the class does not make,, your deposit will be returned.  For further information, contact Lee at 458-3118 or 660-9034.  Send deposits to Lee at 275 Dudala Way, Loudon, TN.  Supply lists will follow receipt of the deposit.

Lyda Plemons has a studio and teaches watercolor and oil in Maryville.

The Fundamentals of Oil Painting: Experienced in several media, Lyda's oil paintings reflect proficient usage of brushwork and color.  Her paintings and prints have been distributed throughout the Southeast Region.  Classes consist of class demonstrations, topics and one on one helps as needed.  Contact Kathy Fisher (see below) to enroll.
