Workshops Presented 2017-2018

Workshop:  Painting Dramatic Landscapes in Watercolor

Artist Instructor: Kate Aubrey

Dates: June 7, 8, 9, 2018.

Location:  Chota Recreation Center, 145 Awohili Drive, Loudon, TN 37774

Times: 9:00 am to 4:30 pm

Fee: AGTV Members, $185; non-members, $215

Description: Join award-winning watercolor artist, Kate Aubrey, for this 3 day workshop.  It's a human trait; people love the outdoors.  As painters we want to do more than reproduce what we see.  We want to capture the smells , the sounds, the warmth of the sun on our shoulders, the lift of our hearts.  We want paintings to sing.

Using photos and/or sketches, students will compose and paint a landscape of their choice.  Emphasis will be on building a strong composition and conveying mood while painting in a looser, more expressive fashion.  Students will learn what to leave in, what to leave out, and why.  We will explore color choice, placement and color values.  Kate's demonstrations will include how to paint beautiful, loose skies and clouds, lost and found edges, and how to build a take-no-prisoners focal point.  Demos will be followed by plenty of student painting and individual instruction.  See Kate's website for more information about Kate and her artwork.

Workshop:  Realistic Oil Painting

Artist Instructor:  Laurie Szilvagyi

Dates: May 3, 4, and 5, 2018

Location: Chota Recreation Center, 145 Awohili Drive, Loudon, TN 37774

Times: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Fee: AGTV Members, $200; non-members, $225  Pre-registration deadline, April 19, 2018

Description:

This workshop includes most materials except brushes.  It has been designed for the artist that wants to learn the basics of oil painting and material handling without investing in many new art products.

The session will begin with an informative Introduction to Oil presentation and a few warm-up exercises. You then will work from a black and white Still Life Photograph provided by the instructor. The main objective will be to learn about the importance of establishing a good composition with gray values first, called a "Grisaille" under painting.
A strong foundation will provide you with a clear roadmap for achieving a realistic still life. This workshop is key to understanding the medium and will better prepare you for more advanced workshops to come.

Mixed Media Workshop - Working as a Layerist

Paul says:  "In this workshop, I will cover technical areas like making your own sanded surface as a good surface is critical in pastel painting. We'll explore mixed media techniques as well. What I have found most important is to teach a system of using color that works well not only in pastel but in any medium. There have been many useful ideas put forth by painters in the long incredible history of painting. Many of these ideas give artists valuable tips in making decisions that help make a successful painting. Making a painting involves making a long string of decisions, so it is important to have a basis for making choices as you go along in the painting process. We'll have plenty of opportunities to show some of these ideas in action and talk about why they work. Come join me for an in depth exploration of pastel. Bring the pastels you have to the workshop. I will supply the sanded boards for the class and other gear we  may need."

The only supplies needed for the workshop are soft pastel sticks or Paul's oil sticks. He recommends pastels sticks such as the set on sale at Jerry's Artarama website www.yourartsupplies.com  Rembrandt Soft Pastel Gift Set 30 half sticks + 15 full sticks $39.99 Sale Price http://www.yourartsupplies.com/product/rembrandt-soft-pastel-box-set---15-full-sticks---30-half-sticks---assorted-colors .  Oil sticks are available from Paul on his website at http://www.pauldemarrais.com/westminster/store.html

Paul will provide the sanded paper for the class.  Students using oil sticks may want to bring a stretched canvas.
